History and international recognition

Founded in 1995, Thawte was the first certification authority to issue TLS certificates to public entities outside the United States. In 2000, Thawte was acquired by VeriSign, Inc (then Symantec, now DigiCert) and became a very important member of this world-famous brand. In 2004, Thawte was the world's first certification authority supporting international IDN domains (including accented characters).
